For me making art is about the exchange of ideas, an epistemology, and a tool for self-discovery. It is these ideas that have inspired me to become an educator and to look at art as both a means and an end. While I have trained in traditional art media my current interest lies with new media and how these tools can be exploited for use in contemporary art. It is my goal to teach art practice and theory at the University level. Education
1998 MFA University of California Berkeley, Berkeley, Ca. Public Art / Installation / New Media Collaborative M.F.A., based on a joint thesis, and collaborative course work.
1991 BFA San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, Ca. New Genres / Performance / Video Art
Summary of Qualifications
I am well-versed in web -programming techniques and methods of how to teach them to non-technical people. I have researched the field of net.art and have spent time to develop links to the history of Western art to place these emerging forms in an art historical context.
I explore new media technologies as a medium for my personal art. I am particularly interested in developing my work in the areas, which are consolidating under the collective term communication art and net.art. My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. I have received an NEA grant for my new media work.
I am well-versed in traditional art methods and new media techniques, allowing me to communicate efficiently with artists from diverse backgrounds interested in exploring new media or augmenting their art with new media techniques such as digital image manipulation for printmakers or non-linear video editing for film makers
I have traveled through Europe, the Balkans, Asia Minor and the Middle East, both for personal enrichment and in order to help with international relief efforts. These experiences have increased my sensitivity to diverse cultures and beliefs and have made me a better and more effective educator, by being able to relate to the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic California student population.
Student evaluations over the past four years have shown that I am an effective instructor able to share my enthusiasm I have for all arts. In particular I have been lauded for my ability to explain difficult technical concepts and techniques and for inspiring student to pursue their own ambitions in the arts. Student comments also have praised my willingness to be available outside of regular classroom hours.
